Benefits of Homemade Jerky
All-natural ingredients: No preservatives, fillers, or artificial flavors.
Customizable: Choose the proteins your dog enjoys most.
Cost-effective: Often cheaper than store-bought options.
Healthier alternative: You control the quality of ingredients.
Choosing the Right Meat
The best meats for dog jerky are lean and high in protein. Some great options include:
Chicken breast
Turkey breast
Beef (top round, flank steak, or sirloin)
Salmon (great for omega-3 fatty acids)
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Jerky
Ingredients:
1 to 2 pounds of lean meat
Optional-”teriyaki” flavoring-soy-free liquid aminos & sesame seeds
Instructions:
Prepare the Meat: Trim any fat off the meat, as fat can cause the jerky to spoil faster.
Slice Thinly: Cut the meat into thin strips, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick.
Mix in flavoring: Optional step
Dehydrate: There are two methods to dry the meat:
Using a Dehydrator: Set your dehydrator to 160°F and place the meat strips on the trays. Dry for 4-6 hours until fully dried.
Using an Oven: Preheat your oven to 170°F (or the lowest setting). Place the meat strips on a wire rack over a baking sheet and bake for 4-6 hours, flipping halfway through.
Cool and Store: Let the jerky cool completely before storing it in an airtight container. Keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
With just a little preparation, you can provide your dog with a high-protein snack they’ll love—without the questionable ingredients sometimes found in many store-bought treats. ENJOY!!
