Dog-Friendly Monterey & Carmel by the Sea

Luna at Carmel Beach

California’s Monterey Coast, with its breathtaking ocean views, sandy beaches, and abundant sea life, offers an unforgettable adventure for the whole family—including our dogs! Here are some of our highlights:

  • Carmel Beach

    • The first time we visited Carmel Beach, we were amazed that such a stunning place allowed off-leash dogs! This mile-long stretch of white sand and crystal-blue water allows dogs to roam freely under voice control. With plenty of space to run, swim, and play, it’s a paradise for pups and their humans alike.

    • There is a small free parking lot that gets filled up on weekends, but also free street parking within easy walking distance on Scenic Road or San Antonio Avenue.

    • For a scenic, on-leash stroll, follow the path along Scenic Road from Carmel Beach to Carmel River State Beach.

  • Whale Watching in Monterey Bay

    • Well-behaved dogs who enjoy boating can join whale-watching tours with Monterey Bay Whale Watch. Monterey Bay’s deep underwater canyon creates the perfect habitat and feeding ground for diverse marine life, including Gray, Blue, and Humpback whales, orcas, and dolphins. Get ready for an unforgettable wildlife adventure!

  • Kayaking Elkhorn Slough

  • Walks & Hikes

    • Monterey Coastal Recreational Trail is a scenic, multi-use path that stretches about 18 miles along the stunning Monterey Bay, passing through Pacific Grove, Monterey, and Marina. Ideal for walking, biking, and running, the trail offers breathtaking ocean views, access to beaches, and glimpses of local wildlife like sea otters and harbor seals. Leashed dogs are welcome.

    • The Pebble Beach Cruise Trail is a picturesque, paved path that runs parallel to parts of the famous 17-Mile Drive, offering incredible views of the rugged coastline, cypress trees, and iconic golf courses. The trail provides access to scenic spots like Spanish Bay, Bird Rock, and the Lone Cypress. Leashed dogs are welcome.

    • Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove is a one-mile long sandy beach known for its tide pools, dunes, and accessible coastal trail. Leashed dogs are welcome.

  • Dog-Friendly Lodging

    • The Quail in Carmel Valley offers dog-friendly rooms, featuring grassy areas for leashed dogs to enjoy and a dog-friendly patio dining experience.

    • Carmel Garden Inn is a quaint dog-friendly bed and breakfast about a 15-minute walk from the beach.

    • The Briarwood Inn in downtown Carmel is also dog-friendly and within walking distance of the beach.

    • Tradewinds Carmel is a peaceful boutique hotel with a Zen garden and is also dog friendly

Be sure to confirm the pet policies and fees before arriving.
