Overlooking Muir Beach

Foggy day at Muir Beach

Muir Beach is about 15 miles north of San Francisco, off Highway 1. The drive to Muir Beach along California’s epic coast is a treat in itself! It’s hard not to get distracted by the beautiful scenery, but keep your eyes on the road as it is winding, narrow, and popular with cyclists.

Muir Beach welcomes dogs off-leash in some areas (as long as they’re under voice control), so pups can enjoy running on the beach, splashing in the surf, and digging holes in the sand. The parking lot at Muir Beach is free but can fill up on holidays and weekends.

There are also several dog-friendly hikes nearby, such as the 5-mile Coastal Trail and Coastal Fire Road Loop and the 4-mile out-and-back hike to Pirate’s Cove. Dogs need to be leashed on these trails, so for an energetic husky mutt like Luna, we started our adventure at the beach. Letting her run and play was the perfect way to burn off some energy before heading to the trails for a more relaxed leashed hike.

Here are some other highlights:

  • Hook Fish: Located in Mill Valley, CA, about a 15-minute drive from Muir Beach, this casual, dog-friendly, sustainable seafood restaurant serves up delicious fish and chips, tacos, and salads. It is a great stop on the way home from the beach.

  • Good Earth Natural Foods: Also in Mill Valley, is a one-stop shop for your beach picnic needs, offering an impressive selection of organic produce, wholesome snacks, and delicious prepared foods to fuel your coastal adventures.

  • Equator Coffee: Last but not least, Equator Coffee, a local favorite with outdoor dog-friendly seating, is the perfect stop for expertly crafted coffees, espresso drinks, tea, and baked goods.

Muir Beach is a haven for dog lovers seeking a blend of relaxation and adventure. So grab your leash, pack your gear, and head to Muir Beach for a day of unforgettable memories with your canine companion.
