Dog-Friendly Sunol Wilderness Regional Preserve

Wildflowers-Lupine

If you’re looking for a dog-friendly adventure with wildflowers, a variety of birds and wildlife, seasonal creeks, and epic views, then Sunol Wilderness Regional Preserve is an excellent option. With the rain of winter into spring, Alameda Creek, as well as other smaller seasonal creeks, are flowing, making the scenery even more beautiful.

HIKES

  • Alameda Creek Overlook (Formerly known as Little Yosemite)-A well-traveled 2-mile out-and-back route that runs alongside Alameda Creek on a wide gravel road featuring small waterfalls, clear pools, and large boulders. While not quite Yosemite, it’s enjoyable and dog-friendly!

  • Canyon View Trail (4.3 miles round trip): A moderate loop hike that takes you through open meadows, rocky outcrops, and shady areas along Alameda Creek. Great for dogs who love a mix of terrains and expansive views.

  • Parking is $5 on weekends and holidays.

OTHER TIPS

  • Sunol Corners Little Market-Located about 5 miles from the preserve entrance, this local favorite is perfect for a quick stop. They offer snacks, drinks, tamales, and their specialty—fresh coconuts.

REACTIVE NOTE

The main trail along Alameda Creek is wide and great for giving space for reactive dogs like Linus, but weekends can be busy with families, other dogs, and events. If your pup is reactive, visiting on a weekday may be a better option.
