Noodle Bowls and Dog Bowls

There are some simple and creative ways to add variety to our dogs’ meals. Variety is good for humans as well as dogs, and one way we like to add some fresh food into our dogs’ meals is by using what we’re already cooking for ourselves. Fresh food is also more gentle on our dogs’ sensitive stomachs! With the weather getting colder, we love making hot soupy noodle bowls.

NOODLE BOWL RECIPE

The first step of a cozy noodle bowl is making the soup stock or dashi. Dashi is a basic Japanese soup stock used in many dishes, and it’s a great base for these noodle bowls.

  • Ingredients for dashi:

    • 3 hand fulls of bonito flakes

    • 3-5 dried anchovies depending on the size

    • 2-3 two inch pieces of kombu (dried sea kelp)

    • 3 cups of water

    • Salt & soy sauce to taste

These ingredients can be found online or a local Asian markets

  • Directions for making dashi:

    • Add kombu to water and bring to a boil.

    • Add bonito flakes and bring water back to a boil, then turn off heat.

    • Add dried anchovies.

    • When the bonito flakes sink to the bottom of the pot, remove flakes, dried anchovies, and kombu from the broth.

    • Save the bonito flakes and anchovies for a tasty dog meal topper. The kelp can also be turned into a dog meal topper by either letting it dry out and pulsing in a blender or finely chopping it up while still hydrated.

    • Finally before seasoning the dashi broth with salt and soy sauce, set some aside for extra flavor and hydration for dog meals.

  • The rest of the noodle bowl:

    • Noodles-udon or ramen (whatever is available and cook as directed on the noodle packaging)

    • Sauted or blanched greens/veggies-like spinach or broccoli

    • Soft boiled egg (Boil water, add eggs, boil gently for 7 minutes, remove from boiling water, and place in ice bath)

    • Sauted mushrooms-like shiitake or maitake (hen of the woods)

    • Extra protein if desired-salmon, tofu, chicken, shrimp are all great options

    • Chopped green onions-for garnish on top

Linus got bonito flakes, anchovies, dashi broth, blanched spinach, and a soft boiled egg in his dinner along with his normal dog food (Steve’s Real Food Raw). His bowl was licked clean!
