Homemade Dog Toy

The holiday season is here, and it’s a great time to spoil our pups. Ok, who are we kidding, our dogs are spoiled all year long! Instead of buying Linus a new toy, I decided to gather some things I had around the house to make a tug of war toy out of upcycled materials! It didn’t take too long, and Linus loved it!

Supplies:

Outgrown puppy collars or old leashes

Old jeans or other thick fabric

Sewing scraps or old rags

Squeaker from an old toy if available

I used a sewing machine, but this could be hand stitched as well.

  1. Cut the buckles off the collars, making sure to get the longest piece available for the handles or cut an old leash into handles

  2. Cut jean or other thick material into any size for the middle “pillow” section

  3. Stuff the pillow with fabric scraps or an old rag, and the squeaker if available

  4. Sew the handles on each end of the pillow using reinforcing stitches. And go over the seam with 4 rows of stitches to makes sure it’s strong

  5. Tug of war time! If your dog is anything like Linus and Luna, supervise play so the homemade creation doesn’t get ripped to shreds!

  6. This is a great way to engage Linus and Luna when the weather is stormy and the trails are muddy.

And if you’re not up for making your own tug of war toy, there’s no shame in that! There are many options out there. Linus and Luna also love their ball tug of war toys. They both enjoy this activity, and it’s a good way to burn off some energy at home.
