Camping with Dogs-Packing Checklist

With camping season around the corner, here’s a quick checklist of things we like to bring with us when we go car camping or road tripping with Luna and Linus.

Our Dog Camping Essentials:

  1. Travel Crate-Crates are important for giving Linus and Luna a safe place to sleep and decompress, and it is especially helpful for reactive dogs like Linus. Be sure to do some crate training before the trip. Here is more information on tips for camping with a reactive dog.

  2. Dog Cot-Good for Linus and Luna to be able to relax during the day and after activities.

  3. Leash-Even if the dogs can be off leash, we always bring leashes with us. These Biothane leashes are easy to clean and waterproof.

  4. Water Proof Blanket-We’re in nature, so waterproof blankets are good for wet and dirty dogs in the car or around camp.

  5. Steve’s Freeze Dried Raw-We like freeze dried raw food for travel because it’s easy to pack and store. At home we feed our dogs frozen raw food, but that’s not practical for camping.

  6. Dog Bowls with Covers-We like dog bowls with lids to keep wildlife (mainly bugs) from being attracted to the bowls, until we can wash them.

  7. Treats & more treats-We bring treats for hiking and training opportunities around the campsite.

  8. Chews & more chews-We use chews as a distraction when we’re doing chores around camp or as a reward.

  9. Dog First Aid Kit-Our dogs haven’t had any major injuries on our camping trips so far, but they do get occasional cuts and sprains, so it’s good to have a first aid kit just in case.

  10. Tick Removal Tool-We’re constantly checking our dogs for ticks, but every once in a while a wayward tick attaches. Yes, it’s gross. These tick tools ensure that the whole tick is removed, rather than just the body.

  11. Poop bags-We want to keep our parks, open spaces, beaches, and forests free of dog poop!

  12. A overhead tethering system-These systems are great for allowing Luna and Linus to move around camp without getting tangled up.

  13. AirTag & Collar Mount-Hopefully we don’t lose sight of our pups, but just in case an AirTag or similar tracking device can be helpful.

  14. Light up collar-We are often hiking at dusk or dawn, so a light up collar makes it easier for other people/cars to see us, and also in off leash areas, a light up collar helps us to spot Linus and Luna.

  15. Dog Life Vest-If we’re going to be doing any water sports like paddle boarding (here is more information on paddle boarding with dogs), we like to bring dog life vests.

For Longer trips we bring some grooming supplies for the dog:

Ok, Luna and Linus are ready for their camping adventures to begin! Who else is ready?!
